Requirements: Requirements may vary by state. The list below offers a general overview, so be sure to check with your state’s Board of Nursing for the most up-to-date information.
- Meet state requirements
- Have a valid U.S. social security number
- Proof of residence in a compact state
- An active and valid nursing license in a compact nursing state
Once you have a compact nursing license, you can then practice nursing, either physically or virtually, in any other participating compact state.
Heads up, if you officially change your state of legal residence, you’ll need to apply for a new compact license through your new home state’s Board of Nursing. Compact licenses are tied to your primary state of residence.
Renewing Your Compact State License
Renewals vary from state to state – it is important to check your states Board of Nursing for more information regarding this. For example, in some states, there is no time limit as long as you remain a legal resident. However, in other states, it must be renewed every one to two years.

Traveling Between Compact States
As a travel nurse, you will not need to apply for a new license in every state if that state is a part of the NLC.
Non-Compact State Residents
According to the NLC, if your state is not a part of the NLC you will be unable to apply for a compact license. If you want to work in other states, you will need to apply for an individual state license in each state. Fortunately, there is no limit to how many state licenses you can have.
