What inspired you to start travel nursing?
I find great pleasure in discovering and exploring new cities, as it presents a unique opportunity to challenge myself by unlearning and relearning. Each new place offers a fresh perspective and a chance to step out of my comfort zone. By letting go of preconceived notions and embracing the unfamiliar, I open myself up to new experiences and perspectives. This process of unlearning and relearning allows me to grow, adapt, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around me. It’s a thrilling journey of discovery and personal development that keeps me engaged and inspired.

What is your biggest piece of advice to fellow clinicians interested in starting their travel journey?
Stepping into the unknown can be a daunting but ultimately rewarding experience. Trusting in the process and taking a leap of faith can lead to personal growth and unexpected opportunities. Embracing uncertainty can help build resilience and confidence in navigating unfamiliar situations. It’s about facing challenges head-on, with a mindset of openness and adaptability, and being willing to learn and grow along the way.

What has been your favorite part about working in your current area?
I find great fulfillment in my role as a medical-surgical RN because it allows me to work with a diverse range of patients facing various ailments. This dynamic environment keeps me deeply engaged and ensures that every day brings new and interesting challenges. For instance, I may start my day caring for a post-operative patient recovering from surgery, then transition to assisting a patient managing a chronic illness, and later provide support to someone with acute health issues. Each interaction presents a unique opportunity for learning and growth, as I navigate different medical conditions and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive care. This diversity of experiences is what drew me to the medical-surgical specialty and continues to fuel my passion for nursing.

What has been your most memorable experience as a travel nurse?
One memorable experience I had was caring for a patient going through narcotic withdrawal. This patient could be quite colorful with their language and behavior, which definitely tested my patience! It was challenging to stay calm and composed during those shifts, but I made a conscious effort to show compassion and understanding. By the end of our time together, we actually formed a good rapport and got along well. It was a funny turnaround, considering how things started out. Overall, this experience really helped me expand my emotional resilience and taught me the importance of finding humor and compassion in difficult situations.
